That’s what my friend Tom said when I told him I was taking a class in Feminist Theory. “Isn’t that kind of like taking coals to Newcastle?” You would think except it’s one thing to be present in a historic movement — like the women’s movement during the 1960′s — and another to look at it from afar. I may have been a young adult back then but young adults have a lot on their minds (!). Besides, what we’re reading goes back to the 20th century. Much of it is very dense and academic and tough to slog through. I mean we’re talking postmodernism, queer theory, transgendered theory and activism by intersexed persons. All this before Judith Butler. Oy. My classmates are very smart. They’re good readers. And the teacher — Jane Rago — is making it all very accessible. So far.
