There’s a new kid in town. After a lifetime of Thin Mints, Peanut Butter Patties and Peanut Butter Sandwiches, Girl Scouts’ cookies now include Savannah Smiles, a “crisp, zesty lemon wedge cookie dusted with powdered sugar.” After two daughters of friends stopping selling Girl Scout cookies and moved on up to college age, I stopped buying Girl Scout cookies, but who can walk by a trio of young, earnest girls holding up signs, selling boxes of cookies, making change without stopping and helping them along? Surely not me. This is how I learned of yet another variety — Savannah Smiles. Nice to see Juliet Gordon Low’s hometown make it to the big time. We love our Daisy Low. Too bad she had such a scoundrel for a husband.

I have been to Savannah one time only and that was with my Girl Scout troop back when dinosaurs still roamed the earth. Of course we went to Juliet’s house and I will never forget the iron gates she forged herself, how the docent told us that her arms became so muscular in the process of making them that she had to get all the sleeves of her dresses let out.
I am still proud of her for that.
